In a world that is growing more broken by the second, what can we do to heal it? Some say that we should stay quiet and not stir the pot. Others say we should stand and start a revolution; casualties be damned. Could there be a middle ground between these two passionate positions? I believe that Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin found that space.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin have been fighting for Hispanic rights for quite some time. This has put them up against a cruel man known as Sheriff Joe Arpaio. Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been brutally abusing Hispanics for quite some time, and Lacey and Larkin have been seeking for a way to expose him. However, this crafty Sheriff kept getting away.
Michael and Jim discovered that when Joe Arpaio took over the police force of Maricopa County, he wreaked havoc by letting go every officer who refused to target Hispanics. They also discovered that Arpaio then replaced these fired officers with others who promised to racially profile anybody who looked like an illegal immigrant. Again, these two brave men reported, and nothing happened. Learn more about Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin: https://twitter.com/JimLarkin_
The greatest tragedy that Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin discovered was Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s “Mexi-Cells.” These were jail cells that routinely failed health inspections. Arpaio used these cells to take the life of Hispanics. Yes, you read that right. Arpaio would place immigrants in these cells and let them get sick and infected with disease. He would then enact Arizona law and deny them medical treatment. Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin reported on this, and finally, they had the world’s attention.
Sheriff Joe Arpaio then showed his true colors. He gathered his band of thugs and busted into the homes of Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin illegally. Read more: Michael Lacey | Twitter and Michael Lacey | LinkedIn
He demanded they give him all evidence, but luckily it was hidden before his arrival. Of course, they refused. It was then that Arpaio made a fatal call, he illegally detained them. This was the story Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin needed.
News spread across the country, and soon a national outcry resounded against Sheriff Joe Arpaio. The pressure became too intense, and he was forced to let the two men go.
Maricopa County would end up paying Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin $3.75 million in a lawsuit. This money would become the starting capital for the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund.
