Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin have been journalists in the Arizona area ever since they dropped out of college together. There, in college, they worked together to supply students with an alternative to their college’s conservative journalism. They created a liberal leaning school newspaper.
When they purchase the Phoenix New Times, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin wanted to make a change in their community. They began to target the corrupt Sheriff of Maricopa County to make this change. For years, alongside the Phoenix New Times, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin did everything in their power to put an end to Joe Arpaio’s spree of terror.
Arpaio fought back. Along with court officials, Joe Arpaio sent a subpoena to the Phoenix New Times. In retaliation, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin published the contents of that subpoena, exposing its contents. The subpoena ordered the Phoenix New Times to release information pertaining to the editors, writers, and readers of the newspaper. The journalists denied the order in addition to writing about it.
Due to the contents of that article, Joe Arpaio ordered his deputies to arrest Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin;however, they were cleared of all charges and eventually sued. They ended up winning a 3.75 million dollar lawsuit.
Arpaio may not have faced any criminal charges from the illegal arrest of the two journalists, but the same year Arpaio arrest a Mexican citizen who was visiting the country on a tourist visa. This resulted in not only a 70 million dollar lawsuit against the county, but criminal contempt of court charges being filed against Joe Arpaio. Arpaio was just about to be sentenced for his crime when Donald Trump came to his save. Trump had been teasing an Arpaio pardon for weeks and he finally did it in October of 2017. Arpaio was once again a free man.
“Rex Tillerson was right,” Michael Lacey proclaimed. “Donald Trump is a moron.” Lacey is, of course, referring to the words of former Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson. Rex Tillerson was eventually released of his duties by President Donald Trump; it is still unknown if Tillerson was fired for his comments or unrelated issues.
“We were a constant thorn in his side, I think that’s why Michael and I got arrest,” said Jim Larkin in reference to his arrest in 2007.
Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are only two of the individuals persecuted by Joe Arpaio for personal reasons. Joe Arpaio is known for attacking his political rivals with the resources of his position. He has smeared, slandered, arrested, and charged his political rivals. This is how Arpaio was able to hold his position as Sheriff for over two decades.
Now, refusing to put Arpaio behind them, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin are continuing their fight against him in the pages of Front Page Confidential. The new publication was founded shortly after Arpaio was originally convicted, but once Arpaio was pardoned, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin were forced to shift their focus back to him. The journalists also created The Frontera Fund, a charitable company that provides support to Hispanic-based charities all through-out the state.
